What metadata does it remove?

Embedded EXIF data such as the camera and lens, capture date and time, and any GPS location tags stored in the file.

Is the image uploaded to be cleaned?

No. Stripping happens entirely in your browser, which matters most for the private photos you would want cleaned in the first place.
